Health Check: A Recommendation – Compiled by German Road Races
In 2007, more runners, both young and old, died during the shorter running events in Germany than during the marathons. German Road Races, on behalf of the German running event organisers, thus has created a catalogue of heath questions, and recommends that all of the GRR members ask that before a runner competes, he should carefully read and closely adhere to the advice provided, in order to prevent further deaths from occurring.
If done correctly, endurance sports can prove to be an optimal method for maintaining health and performance throughout ones life. Do you wish to compete in a long-distance endurance event (5 km to 10 km, half marathon, marathon, or longer)? In order for you to have an optimal start to your physical activities and to avoid health risks to the greatest extent possible, we would like to ask you to fill out the GRR questionnaire honestly and to the best of your ability. Should you have answered any questions with yes, we strongly recommend that you undergo a cardiological examination before initiating any regular training or competitive activities.
Please note that the amount of training you do plays a key role in your level of fitness and is also essential for your state of health. Should you plan on competing in a half-marathon, for example, you should plan and train accordingly for at least 1 ½ to 2 years.
We expect you to demonstrate a great degree of self-responsibility. Do not play games with your health, but rather treasure it and take great care of it.
